The introduction of new Diplomas is a central pillar of the Government’s plans for 14-19 education reform.  The Diplomas are being progressively introduced in a variety of subject areas with national entitlement for all learners in England in September 2013.

Diplomas will be offered as part of 4 learning pathways for young people:

1.    GCSEs and A levels
2.    Diplomas
3.    Apprenticeships
4.    Foundation Learning Tier

They will be available at Foundation (level 1), Higher (level 2) and Advanced (level3) levels.

Diplomas have several key features:

  • They blend general knowledge with applied and practical learning
  • They are a composite qualifications relating to sectors of the economy and comprise principal learning, generic learning and additional and specialist learning
  • They are curriculum based
  • They will be delivered by consortia of schools and colleges who will engage with employers and higher education to support delivery
  • They will require a learner to do a minimum of 10 days work experience.
